The resort's design was inspired by the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of the site. The team aimed to utilize the complex terrain of the original site of Lishan Village, integrating architectural forms and elements of traditional mountain villages in Zhejiang with modern technology and local materials. The result is a resort that exudes a wild, simple, and quiet atmosphere, reminiscent of an ancient village.
The unique properties of the design lie in its location and architectural style. Situated at the east foot of Wujia Mountain, the resort overlooks the Shenxianju scenic spot. The design showcases the collision and integration of traditional landscape and modern elements. The all-glass facade of the public space ensures the best landscape presentation, while the guest rooms, themed around the original local ecological village, are nestled among trees and winding paths.
The resort was realized using vernacular architecture, a style that is closely linked to the land and human spirit. The team prioritized the use of organic materials, including the stones from the original village's "Old Parapet", which were reapplied as a finish to the base. This approach not only respects the site's history but also adds a new spiritual meaning to the hotel.
The project presented several design challenges, including how to make full use of the surrounding landscape. The building is high in the north and low in the south, ensuring that all guestrooms and public spaces have a view of the main scenery. The overall layout follows the principle of combining nature, with the building scattered according to the mountain. The public spaces are designed as a landscape building that respects the context, while the villa rooms, modeled on villages, are orderly scattered over public spaces, integrating with mountains, terraced fields, and springs.
The Banyan Tree Xianju Resort is a shining example of how architecture can respect and enhance the natural environment while providing a luxurious experience for its guests. It is a testament to the harmonious blend of traditional architecture and modern design. The project was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2022, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
